The female genital mutilation ( FGM ) is generally understood as the conceivable acts of injuring, disfiguring, or removing some parts or whole of the sensitive parts of female sexual organ.
I was discussing with a friend and I was made to understand that such act is still very much practiced in Nigeria. The practice which involves the cutting off of the clitoris, labia, prepuce or all of it as the case may be is believed to pave way for docility, protection of virginity, promiscuity, obedience and total submission to her husband and a host of other excuses. My worry here is that majority of these girls are operated on at a tender age when they know little or nothing about it except for a few of grown up girls that undergo the operation believing that it will help in child birth and make them more of a woman. Studies have shown that this could lead to serious health consequences on the reproductive, physical and emotional health of the girl as the unjust cause could lead to severe pain, injury to adjacent tissues of the urethra and vagina leading to several infections and also affect her sexual life and child birth. My take here is; did God ask us to circumcise the female group? I only know of God's instruction on the male issue not the other way round. Should the ladies for change go for revolution?
